Wash Day Featuring Aphogee + Elasta QP

Happy Wash Day, ladies and gentlemen! It's been forever since I've shared a wash day post, right? Since it's the start of a new year, I decided it was high time I did so. I'm currently about 18 weeks post relaxer and have been hiding my hair under buns and twists for many of those weeks. It's time to let my hair breathe for a few days! I was due for a moisturizing shampoo + light protein conditioning, so I grabbed up some of my favorite products from Elasta QP and Aphogee to get the job done. Check out my deets for yesterday's wash day experience below.

Lazy Girl's Wash Day | 31 Weeks Post

How has your hair journey been going so far, this year? It's been a month or two since I've updated about my hair journey here. And let me tell you, these last few months have been a lot of work!  I'm 31 weeks post, and my hair has been telling me to take it easy. I don't always listen, however. When I updated back in January, I was experiencing a little breakage and shedding. After careful consideration, I decided to do a trim, putting my hair back at shoulder length. I was pretty happy about my trim, but unsure about what to do next with my hair. I wanted to baby my ends as much as possible. I wanted to protect my sensitive nape and edges as much as I possibly could. So I decided against relaxing and have just been deep conditioning and protective styling. I have faced a few challenges with stretching, but I feel that with low manipulation my hair will be just fine. I've finally decided to keep it simple and let my hair chill out. My last wash day was yesterday and is pretty much the way I've been cleansing my hair lately (with the exception of the shampoo I had two weeks ago). Check out how I've been "lazy girl cleansing" below.

Wash Day | 7 Weeks Post Relaxer

How is everyone doing this week? I hope all is well with each and every one of you! I'm gonna keep it all the way real with you guys. This week I just did not feel like washing my hair, though I know I needed to! So today I'm going to share with you my lazy wash day. My goal this week was to add a little moisture to my tresses (as the SheaMoisture JBCO Edge Treatment I used in last week's protective style dried it out a bit). Thankfully I was able to achieve this with a quick co-wash and a 15 minute deep conditioning.

The Experience
1. I saturated my hair with warm water and co-washed using Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Conditioner throughout my hair and scalp. After two washes, I rinsed the conditioner from my hair completely.
2. Applied OGX Coconut Milk Nourishing Conditioner throughout my hair. I put on my plastic cap and deep conditioned under my hooded dryer for about 15-20 minutes
3. I then rinsed the conditioner thoroughly, doing my final rinse with cool water. Following my rinse, I squeezed the excess water from my hair with a t-shirt.
4. Applied OGX Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum to my hair then wrapped hair in a t-shirt to dry.
5. After my hair completely dried, I applied Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter Leave-in Conditioner and sealed with grapeseed oil

The Results
My results were pretty good, considering I cut my normal wash day time in half. At 7 weeks post, I was happy to see how much the Herbal Essences Totally Twisted defined my natural curl pattern. I also had great slip afterwards, making it easy to detangle before deep conditioning. That's exactly why it's my favorite co-wash to use when I'm stretching. And since I plan to stretch until the spring, I plan to really stock up on Totally Twisted!

And of course because I did a co-wash instead of cleansing, my hair doesn't feel squeaky clean. It's soft, but it doesn't feel as light and voluminous as it usually does after using the serum. I'm never heavy-handed with the serum or the leave-in, either. So I will probably be using a cleanser on Sunday night. I'm also planning to start the Inversion Method tonight, so I know I will be needing a really good cleanse soon. Have any of you guys tried the Inversion Method? If so, do you have any tips or pointers to share with your friend over here?

The Style
Remember the updo I did with the jumbo braiding hair last week? Well I was very tempted to do the same style this week. I'm trying to get some quick protective style ideas under my belt so I can tuck away my hair with minimal effort. So I was looking at this video from MsAriella89 on YouTube and decided to do yet another quick style with my jumbo braiding hair.

To create this style, all I had to do was separate my hair into three sections. I did one single part between the ears to separate the top and back sections. Then did a side part, making a small section to the right and a larger section to the left. I flat twisted both sides and wrapped them both around the back section of my hair, making one ponytail. Then I looped the jumbo braiding hair around the ponytail and twisted it all down into one large pony. Do you like? Have you tried this style before?

The Wash Day Experience

Co-Cleansing at 8 Weeks Post Relaxer

Hey guys! I'm happy to share with you all what came to be an awesome wash day yesterday. If you recall my last wash day post, you know that I tried KLP's method of co-cleansing for the first time a few weeks ago. And though my mix didn't work well for me, I was eager to try the co-cleansing method again. After over a week of doing nothing to my hair but moisturizing, sealing, and doing scalp massages, I was ready for a cleanse and good deep conditioning. Check out all the details from my wash day experience below!

The Experience

1.Pre-pooed with coconut oil down the length of my hair and Hair Trigger Growth Elixir on my scalp for 1 hour.
2.Combined Mill Creek Biotin Shampoo with grapeseed oil and Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Conditioner (it's inexpensive and makes my NG happy!) for my co-cleanser mix.
**Making your own co-cleanser usually calls for 1 part shampoo, 2 parts oil, and 3 parts conditioner.**

3. Deep conditioned with Shea Moisture Organic Yucca & Baobab Anti-Breakage Masque x Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil (won in this giveaway) while in the shower.
4. Rinsed deep conditioning treatment and applied OGX Hydrating Macadamia Oil Conditioner for 5 minutes.

4. Rinsed conditioner and removed excess water with a t-shirt..
5. Detangled with Aloe Vera Juice and wrapped hair in t-shirt to air-dry for two hours.
Leave Ins- Aloe Vera Juice, Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Leave-In Conditioner, and grapeseed oil (using the LCO Method).

The Results
Let me start by saying that I'm glad I tried co-cleansing again! I bought a bottle applicator from Walmart (the $0.68 bottles for condiments) and added one part shampoo, one part oil, and a little over three parts conditioner. Using the applicator bottle really helped me with precision. Using this mixture didn't make my hair wiry or dry at all! It wasn't stripping, but my hair really felt clean afterwards.

I was skeptical about using the Shea Moisture Organic Yucca & Baobab Anti-Breakage Masque, since it was very drying the last time I used it. But combined with the Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil, this deep conditioning was a win! My hair felt so much stronger after using it.

My shedding has decreased a lot over the last couple of weeks and for that I am ecstatic. I've also noticed that my edges are filling in nicely. I've been using Jamaican Black Castor Oil on them every other night and it seems to be doing the trick. So with the decreased shedding (with the aid of the Aloe Vera Juice daily spritzer), my improving edges, and what appears to be a winning combination of products this week for wash day, this has been the best wash day I've had since childbirth. I have thickening, soft, and manageable hair at 8 weeks post relaxer. I am one happy mama! I'm still in the process of doing my hair, so I'll share my final results in another post!

Co-Wash Day: Mommy & Me Edition

This week I decided to do a little something different with my wash day post. Since I didn't get around to cleansing my daughter's hair earlier in the week, I combined our wash days. And boy, two-in-one wash days can be a lot to handle at times! But since we were both only due for a light co-wash and conditioning, I made things as simple as possible. We even use a couple of the same products so I planned for an easy, breezy wash session yesterday afternoon.

wash day relaxed hair

My Experience
1. Pre-pooed with extra virgin coconut oil down the length of my hair and applied Hair Trigger to my scalp.
2. Co-washed with Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle. I usually use this as a deep conditioner mixed with other products, but decided to go against the grain with this co-wash.
3. Deep conditioned with Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructurizer with no heat for about an hour while I cleaned house. I needed a little protein in my life, so I decided to use up the last of this baby so I can add it to my shopping list for Friday. You guys know I'm on a strict no-buy and am only repurchasing staple products when I collect two empties.
4. Rinsed the Aphogee thoroughly and did a quick moisturizing condition with OGX (formally Organix) Macadamia Oil Conditioner
5. I completely rinsed the conditioner and removed as much excess water as I could. I then applied Elasta QP Leave in Conditioner to the length of my hair and sealed with grapeseed oil
6. Air-dried with my hair wrapped in a grey a-shirt for the rest of the day.

Gab's Experience
1. Pre-pooed with extra virgin coconut oil.
2. Rinsed hair and detangled with fingers.
3. Applied As I Am Coconut Cowash generously throughout her hair and let it sit for a few minutes. Then worked my fingers through her scalp and hair to clean.
4. After rinsing the cowash, I applied the rest of the Aussie Moist 2 Minute Reconstructurizer to her hair for a moisturizing deep conditioner. Now I have two empties!!! I put her under the dryer with a plastic cap for about 30 minutes (or until she started complaining).
5. I rinsed out the conditioner  and removed as much excess water as I could with a tee-shirt.
6. Applied a light mist of aloe vera juice to her hair and detangled with my fingers.
7. Separated her hair into sections, applied Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave In Conditioning Cream throughout her hair, and sealed with extra virgin coconut oil
8. Twisted the sections of her hair and put her hair in a scarf + bonnet to dry overnight.

Our Results
My hair felt very soft and moisturized. I love how soft the Aussie Moist left my hair after co-washing with it! I had such great slip for 5 weeks post! I may start using this product exclusively for my co-washes, alternating with my Herbal Essences conditioners from now on. I'll still continue to deep condition Gab's hair with it though, as her hair seems to love it as well. And thanks to the OGX Macadamia Oil conditioner, I love how great my hair still smells today. That stuff made my hair feel like butter after my final rinse! I hope Walgreens still has the OGX products on sale for BOGO this week, as I may get a couple more tomorrow.

Gab's hair loves the As I Am Coconut Cowash. I've been using it since hearing MahoganyCurls rave about it on YouTube and have not been disappointed! It's very cleansing, yet moisturizing to her hair and really helps define her curls. It also smells like a dream! I thought the Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave in Conditioning Cream would beat the frizzies and define Gab's curls more so than the Shea Moisture Curl Defining Pudding that I normally use, but it did not. It's another product that I was trying to finish up, but I don't think I'll be repurchasing so soon. Since I have no plans of going far until the weekend, I'm done up with a rolled bang and messy bun inspired by Keyda and Gabs is rocking a bun. Next time, I promise to take better pictures!

Wash Day: 4 Weeks Post Relaxer

Since my last wash day, maintaining my hair has been pretty easy. I've been keeping things simple. My hair has either been pinned up in a loose bun or pinned down and to the side in a loose bun. So much for avoiding buns, right? I did, however, discover my shedding and thinning edges were both due to post-partum changes. Now that I know that, all I can do is continue to nurture my hair and hope a turnaround happens soon.

wash day experience

My wash day came around last night. And for once, I was actually excited about washing my hair. Here's how it went:

1. I co-washed my hair with Herbal Essences Honey I'm Strong Strengthening Conditioner. I love using this as a co-wash because it smells great and gives great slip. I cleansed and rinsed my hair twice with it and warm water.

2. After rinsing the Herbal Essences Honey I'm Strong Strengthening Conditioner, I applied my Nexxus Humectress Moisturizing Conditioner Mix generously to my hair. For this mix, I simply added a few drops of peppermint oil and Jamaican Black Castor Oil to the conditioner. I then put on my plastic cap and let the conditioner steam while I was in the shower.

3. I completely rinsed the conditioner and removed as much excess water as I could with a tee-shirt. Then I sprayed Aphogee Keratin and Green Tea Reconstructurizer all over my hair.

4. I saturated my slightly damp hair with Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter Leave In Conditioner and sealed with grapeseed oil. I finished by gathering my hair into a loose bun and tying it up with my silk scarf to air-dry overnight.

I had a pretty simple wash night, didn't I? This mama was sleepy and tired so the less fuss with the hair, the better!

RESULTS: I'm happy to report that I've seen very little shedding after this "wash." There was none during the entire process, but I saw some shed hair as I created my bun this morning. My hair felt soft, thick, and full of moisture. I truly believe the Nexxus Humectress and the Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter Leave In have contributed the most to my soft, moisturized hair. I guess I will put them both back into heavy rotation, especially with this on and off cool weather. Overall, I was pleased with my results this week!

The Wash Day Experience: Week One

Hello, loves! Today I'm co-hosting The Wash Day Experience with KLP & Keyda from Saving Our Strands. We're sharing on our blogs today about one of the most important routines within the hair care regimen, the wash day. We encourage you all to join in and take part in this experience as well!

healthy hair journey

My most recent wash day was on Sunday, March 2, 2014.
It went a little something like this.

1. I begin my wash day experience with pre-pooing. Instead of using a conditioner + an oil of my choice per usual, I simply applied oil to my dry hair the night before I did my cleanse. I massaged my scalp and coated my hair generously with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. Then I covered my hair with a plastic cap, stocking cap, and hair scarf and left it overnight.

2. Since this was my first cleanse after relaxing my hair, I used a clarifying shampoo the next morning instead of co-washing with conditioner. I used ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo, which is currently my staple clarifying shampoo. I cleansed and rinsed my hair twice with shampoo and warm water.

3. After washing my hair, I used a tee-shirt to remove some of the excess water from my hair before applying conditioner. I conditioned with ORS Replenishing Conditioner, a great light protein fix, under a plastic cap while in the shower.

4. After rinsing the ORS Replenishing Conditioner, I applied my Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner (infused with peppermint oil) to my hair and let it sit for about ten minutes. I used the Herbal Essences to add a little moisture back into my hair and added a few drops of peppermint oil into the conditioner to stimulate my scalp.

5. I completely rinsed the conditioner and removed as much excess water as I could with a tee-shirt. Then I sprayed Aphogee Keratin and Green Tea Reconstructurizer all over my hair.

6. I moisturized my slightly damp hair with Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter Moisturizer and sealed with grapeseed oil. Then I applied just a bit of GVP Silk Remedy to my hair, paying close attention to my edges and ends. I finished by gathering my hair into a loose bun and tying it up with my silk scarf to air-dry for the rest of the day.

RESULTS: My hair felt very soft, strong, and thoroughly moisturized. It didn't feel heavy, as it does sometimes when I use the Elasta QP Moisturizer. And it smelled great! That counts for something, right?

NATURAL HAIR TALK WITH MahoganyCurls™

What do you love most about being able to share your passion for natural hair on YouTube? What is the most rewarding aspect?  The thing that I love most about sharing my passion for natural hair on YouTube is the fact that it is helpful to others embarking on their natural hair journey. The most rewarding aspect is when others approach me and explain that I inspired them to go natural or my tutorials and thoughts regarding the natural hair journey has helped them in many ways. I love to teach, and I love explaining to others how to go about caring and embracing their natural hair. I get to share what I have learned during my journey, good or bad.

What does your weekly hair care routine look like?  I like to cowash (conditioner wash) my hair once a week. I also like to deep condition my hair every Sunday. I usually twist my hair for styling. It usually takes about an hour and 30 minutes to complete my hair from start to finish. I love "As I Am Coconut Cowash" for cleansing and Shea Moisture products are my go to stylers.

How did you go about researching for the right regimen/products for your hair? What have been the most helpful tools in your research?  I like to read the ingredients. When I first went natural, I used to use products that would make my hair very dry. At the time, I did not know much about ingredients in certain products. I used to visit other blogs and hair forums that would explain why certain products may cause dryness. Eventually I learned about the "curly girl method" and I follow that method now. It has helped my natural journey a lot. Research is extremely helpful.

Have you ever had a setback? If so, how did you recover from it? If I have a set back I will clarify my hair with "As I Am Coconut Cowash" and deep condition my hair for an hour and a half. After I do this, I will proceed to styling my hair with my favorite products. I would also eliminate the product that caused the setback from my regimen.

What is your favorite way to style your hair? Favorite part of your regimen?  Right now I am a huge fan of twist outs. My favorite part of my regimen is applying my leave in conditioner. I love a rich creamy leave-in. I feel that a great leave-in will make or break your hair style. I look for leave-in conditioners that will provide an ample amount of moisture for my hair. One of my favorites is "The Conditioner" by Paul Mitchell.

Does your regimen differ from the summer to the winter? If so, in what ways?  No, it does not. For the most part, I style my hair the same way. I like to keep my regimen very simple. I feel that low manipulation is very important during your natural hair journey since natural hair can be very fragile.

Tell me one thing you've learned on your journey that you wish you knew when you did the big chop back in 2009.  I wish I knew that natural hair would be extremely dry compared to relaxed hair. It took about a month or so for me to find products that worked for me that would not dry my hair out. Once I figured this out, I feel as if the ball began to roll and my journey took off without too many setbacks.

What advice would you give to my readers who have just started their natural hair journeys and are seeking support and information?  I would suggest that they have patience, research natural hair online, and continue to have confidence. The natural hair community is very supportive. YouTube and hair forums that cater to natural hair will be very helpful in your journey. The last thing I would say is be proud of yourself and be proud of your hair. You are wearing your crown. Show the world how beautiful it is.

We all know that maintaining a healthy hair regimen takes patience, time, and love. What motivates you to continue on your journey?  I am motivated by other naturals. Naturals that are starting their natural hair journey inspire and motivate me. It shows beauty and confidence.

What are your current hair goals?  I would like to reach APL (arm pit length) while my hair is curly, with shrinkage, in a couple of years. I would like to have a few layers cut in the near future also. I think it would jazz up my 'do.

What do you hope viewers take from engaging with you and subscribing to your YouTube channel?  I hope that they find my channel to be inspiring and educational. I am very passionate about the educational aspect of natural hair and hopefully it will inspire them to start their own channel to document their journey along with helping others.

What can we expect to see more of from MahoganyCurls™ in 2014? Are there any events or projects in the works that you would like to tell us about?  Every Wednesday, from 7:00 - 7:30 pm EST I host a live YouTube streaming show called "MahoganyCurls™ LIVE!" My Updated Hair Care Regimen

I can't believe it's been almost a year since I've shared anything about my hair journey on the blog!  I looked in my hair journal this morning and saw that I've switched a few things up since my last share, so I decided to share an updated regimen.  Also I'm taking part in Traycee's 2013 KISS Boot Camp Challenge so making note of these changes on the blog helps me stay on task and remain accountable.  Check out the details below.

Daily: Moisturize and seal.
Nightly, I moisturize my hair and seal it with oil. Then I wrap or pin my hair, covering it with a silk scarf.  2-3 times a week I do scalp massages, using a fusion of coconut oil, castor oil, and peppermint oil (which stimulates the scalp).

Moisturizers I Use:
Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship
Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer (alternate with the above)
Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Lotion (during long stretches)

Various Oils I Use:
Castor Oil, Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, Peppermint Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Jojoba Oil

Weekly: Washing/Co-Washing, Deep Conditioning
On Sunday, I clean my hair by co-washing (washing with conditioner) or shampooing with a moisturizing shampoo such as Nexxus Therappe.
On Wednesday, I clean my hair by co-washing again. After co-washing, I deep condition my hair, rinse, apply leave-in conditioner, moisturize and seal, and place in a protective style (usually a bun).
I always air-dry unless I’m away from home.

Conditioners Used for Co-Washing:
Hair One Hair Cleanser and Conditioner with Tea Tree Oil
Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner

Conditioners Used for Deep Conditioning:
Nexxus Humectress infused with Coconut Oil, Castor Oil and Peppermint Oil
Herbal Essences Hello Hydration infused with Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, and Peppermint Oil

Bi-Monthly: Hot Oil Treatment
I do this more often in the Winter months, as my scalp and hair are more prone to dryness in the Winter.  This hot-oil treatment is usually a mix of Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil,  Castor Oil, and Peppermint Oil.

Monthly: Clarifying Wash, and Protein Deep Conditioning
Once monthly, I do a clarifying wash with ORS Aloe Shampoo. I also deep condition with a light protein conditioner such as ORS Replenishing Conditioner infused with Castor Oil and Peppermint Oil. Afterwards, I apply leave-in conditioner, moisturize and seal, and place in a protective style.

4 x Annually: Relaxer and Protective Style
I relax by using Motions No-Lye Relaxer. Before applying neutralizer, I rinse relaxer from hair and apply a light protein to the hair such as Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor. This replenishes the protein I lost from the relaxing process. I let it stay on for 5 minutes, then continue with the neutralizing and deep conditioning process. Afterwards, I apply a leave-in conditioner, moisturize and seal, and place hair in a protective style.

Use as needed: Hair Spritzer
To keep my hair moisturized, especially during stretches, I spritz my hair with a mix of aloe vera juice, rosewater and vegetable glycerine.  It helps with detangling also.  Find out more about the mix here.

**My Hair Essentials**
silk scarf/bonnet (to protect my hair from moisture-stripping cotton)
plastic caps (for deep conditioning)
