Tuesday's Tunes: Volume 11

Happy Tuesday, loves! I hope you all are doing well and that your week is off to a great start so far! It's been a while since I've shared a playlist here on the blog with you guys. And I noticed I haven't done a Tuesday's Tunes installment in a long time, either. So I decided to give you all a taste of the songs I've been listening to today and receiving great vibes from. And trust me, they are all feel-good songs. I hope you enjoy!

It's quite apparent I'm an Andre 3000 stan.  And this could arguably be one of my favorite songs of his as a solo artist (though this was a double-disc effort from Outkast). It's so fun, upbeat, and unlike anything else that was playing on the radio at that time.  It's another one of those "cotton candy on a summer day" type of songs for me. I smile with great memories each time I hear it. And don't put the video on. You would think I was one of the girls in the American Bandstand-ish audience, too!

While I'm no fan of Odd Future, there's something about Syd the Kid's voice that is so mesmerizing to me. It's so enchanting, soft, and sweet. And the dope production by Chad Hugo (of the Neptunes) totally seals the deal on this track. I'm not ashamed to admit I've listened to this song on repeat for the last couple of months. Isn't it so infectious, though?

Something about this song always puts a swing in my step and a drop of sweetness in my stride!  It's like indulging in the good old days I never got the chance to witness personally. I love the way Raphael Saadiq adds the Motown funk sound to this track. This is one of the songs I listen to when I'm up getting dressed and it instantly puts me in a good mood. Are you a fan of Raphael Saadiq? What is he up to these days?

Jennifer Hudson did it with this one! I love everything about this song--from Jennifer's soulful voice, the vocal arrangements, the lyrics, the T.I. feature, down to the disco elements of the track. Doesn't it remind you of something Chaka Khan or Evelyn "Champagne" King would have done in the 80s? It just makes me want to get up and do my two-step shimmy!

There was no way I could mention Jennifer Hudson's single without noting the song it sampled from. "I'm In Love" is a song that makes you want to get up and dance! When listening to this song and getting into the groove, I always wonder what my mom and dad were like during the early 80s and how they used to "get down" at the parties. I could see my mom now!

Tuesday's Tunes: Volume 10

Happy Tuesday, guys and dolls!  How are you all doing today?  I hope your week is off to a positive start and you're all in good spirits!  As it usually goes, I would like to thank you guys for stopping by here today and checking out the tunes I've been grooving to so far.  I appreciate each and every one of you and hope that you hear at least one song you like or can reminisce to or vibe with while listening along today.

I'm Still In Love by Sean Paul x Sasha- This song takes me way back to my freshman year of college! I remember everyone posted up in their dorm rooms studying this video. It seems that all the girls were trying to wind up their waistlines like the chicks in the video, while the dudes were admiring the winding lol. If this song wasn't making you dance when you heard it, it was making you think about that special somebody you were still in love with.  And yes, it's still in heavy rotation on my devices like it's brand new.

Fire We Make by Alicia Keys x Maxwell- The first time I heard this song, I swear I got chills.  Something about Alicia Keys and her smooth sweet vocals paired with lyrics that perfectly vocalize what the heart is trying to express makes me like her music.  And pairing those vocals with the likes of Maxwell-- that's fire for serious tho!  It's no secret around here that I love that man Maxwell, so he could sing just about anything to me and I would just melt.  The chemistry these two have in this song as well as in the visual is electrifying, indeed.

Growing Pains (Do It Again)- Ludacris x Disturbing Tha Peace- Listening to this song takes me way back to family reunions, high-top sneakers with slouch socks, and soda pops in glass bottles. Talk about reminiscing!  I just love the lyrics in this song provided by each respective member of Disturbing Tha Peace.  Lil Fate talks about rocking the infamous BKs and Cross Colours (do you guys remember those?) while Shawnna rhymed about playing double dutch and those beloved jelly shoes.  Even Ludacris and veteran Scarface lend lyrics that send us slipping back down memory lane as they rap about Cadillac dreams, climbing over barbed wire fences, jheri curls, and Jordans. Seeing this visual also makes me smile as I think of how fun family get-togethers and barbecues used to be in the summertime.  I also giggle when I see the former Disturbing Tha Peace member 2 Chainz in the mix, who then was a rapper by another name.  Can you spot him in the video? I'll even give you a prize if you can tell me what he used to go by!

Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke x T.I. and Pharrell- Something about this song just makes me want to get up and dance! As soon as I hear the beat, my shoulders start bouncing. I can see this song being a very popular one for the summer.  So much so, that the first time I heard the song to its entirety, I was riding in the car with my MIL while she turned the volume up proclaiming it was "her song." Seems like Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell got everybody in a groove!  How are you guys liking "Blurred Lines?"

A Love Bizarre by Sheila E.- I will admit, I owe my devotion for Sheila E. to Prince, as it seems I love everything he touches (well except Graffiti Bridge lol). I was indeed a young'n the first time I heard A Love Bizarre and have been vibing to it every since.  Nevermind the fact that I was probably still crawling and in diapers when this single hit the airwaves.  And nevermind the fact that I didn't understand what the lyrics of the song meant until I was grown lol. Just as Sheila E. admits in her lyrics, "we all want the stuff that lives in our wildest dreams," don't we? And is it just me or doesn't she kind of remind you of Miss Keri Baby in this video?

Tuesday's Tunes Volume 9

Happy Tuesday, beautiful people! How are you guys doing? Beautiful by Mariah Carey x Miguel- This is such a cute song to me! Though I'm not the biggest fan of the visuals released for the single, I could listen to Mariah and Miguel sing together all day any day. I love how their voices compliment each other.  And I wouldn't mind riding the back of a motorcycle with my hair in the wind while someone sang about just how beautiful I was along the ride, either.

We Ride by Rihanna- Now this one is an oldie but goodie for me. I don't know what it is about the approaching summer season, but it always ushers in a longing to hear this song. We Ride reminds me so much of my brother, as we were both big Rihanna fans when this particular album dropped.  Playing it is like a subtle reminder of the summers we've spent together and how strong our bond is. I love him like my first born and we'll always have each other's backs through whatever storms we face. We Ride, we ride, until the day that we die :-)

The One by Tamar- This is, hands down, gonna be my jam for the summer! I fell in love as soon as I heard the sampling from Mtume's Juicy Fruit combined with Tamar's vocals. Hearing this song just makes me feel all warm inside-- happy to be in love and happy to be loved!  And when they released the video, I fell in love all over again.  Seeing her in all her pregnant glory on the boardwalk made me think of how I want to spend my summer--- glowing and enjoying the local beach! Doesn't this song just make you smile?

Body Party by Ciara- Hearing the sample of Ghost Town DJ's My Boo got me all excited about this song and the excitement hasn't simmered down yet! This is a fun song that has become quite an addiction for me also, as I'm always playing it on my phone.  And seeing the video with Future in it doesn't hurt either. For some reason I've been finding him quite attractive right here lately. Maybe it's the hormones. Maybe it's the feeling this song gives me. Lol who knows?

Sandcastle Disco by Solange- This song always makes me think of rainbows, sunshine, and happiness. I've loved the lighthearted, upbeat feel of this song since I purchased the album years ago. In fact, I still listen to it for a slight pick-me-up in the mornings and it still makes me smile and sing along to the lyrics. Are you as big of a Solange fan as I am? Do you still listen to Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams like it was just released, same as I do?

Tuesday's Tunes: Volume 8

Happy Tuesday, guys and dolls! As it usually goes, I would like to thank you guys for stopping by my little corner of the blogosphere today to check out the tunes I've been listening to.  Every now and again, which seems like more often than not, I have to share a few songs that take my mind back to beautiful memories of yesterday.  Doesn't it feel good to hear an old song and get flashbacks of good times, great friends, and fun places?  Tell me a couple of songs that give you those good vibes in the comments and be sure to check out the ones I've shared below.

Feel the Funk by Immature- This song brings back all kinds of memories! If you checked out my last installment of Tuesday's Tunes, you could probably tell from my membership in the B2K fan club that I was first a fan of Immature. I used to love these guys! And this is my favorite song by them.  I remember the night my mom bought this tape for me from Walmart (probably tired of me trying unsuccessfully to dub it from the radio and felt sorry for me lol). I also remember the night my baby brother pulled all the tape from the plastic casing and ruined it! I believe I cried.  This video introduced an all-grown up Immature-- complete with the relaxers and the bob-dos for Batman and Romeo.  For some reason I thought this look was everything in elementary school. My, how trends change!

Never Forget You by Noisettes-  Shinghai Shinowa is so beautiful in this video! It's been one of my favorites since I first heard it as I started off on a trip to DC back in 2010.  I was so captivated by her unique sound that I googled nonstop until I found this group--The Noisettes.  I eventually got the album and also fell in love with party song Don't Upset the Rhythm also.  If you enjoyed this video, be sure to check out Wild Young Hearts, as I'm sure you will enjoy!

Everything by Fefe Dobson- Talk about memories! I think about freshman year at WSSU each time I hear this song. I played it in the mornings when I cleaned my dorm, in the evenings when I studied, and when I entertained my friends at night.  And when I wasn't playing it on my laptop, MTV and VH1 were airing the video repeatedly. It was inevitable that I would soon become hooked to Fefe Dobson belting out lyrics with infectious vocals while strumming vicious chords on that guitar.  And believe it or not, I never get tired of the song.

Girls Dem Sugar by Beenie Man- This song brings back thoughts of 2000, when I was young wild and free.  I would dance in the mirror to this song and get all hype when it was played at the dances. Nonetheless, dancing in the mirror didn't help my chances of appearing to have any rhythm, lol. It didn't stop me from yelling out "that's my song" every time I heard Beenie Man and Mya's vocals lull over that fierce rhythm either!

Bonnie and Shyne by Shyne- If this song doesn't take you back, I don't know what song will today! Every time I reference myself as the girl with the "little bit of MAC lipglass, hair in a bun well done," I am paying homage to Shyne and this track, it seems.  The beat is sickening, making me dance and wiggle my hips each time I hear it.  The lyrics, however, always made me ponder what it really meant to be a ride or die girl.  How many people will really be there with you through your worst and your best?

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is by Rose Royce- One of my favorite comedies of all time is Carwash, starring Richard Pryor.  Along with being a hilarious movie with an all-star cast made up of very colorful characters, this movie had an incredible soundtrack.  "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" could easily be one of my favorite tracks from the album.  It's definitely a song that will get you up and going early in the morning.  I don't know if it's the funky groove of the track or the "put up or shut up" lyrics, but it definitely gets me up on "being about it instead of talking about it."  You should have seen me up dancing to this song this A.M. like I was on Soul Train or something lol. Shaking my pseudo-afro and all!

All About You by SWV- Now this song reminds me of that innocent middle school crush from back in the day.  I have vivid memories of the guy who used to bring me candy and treats when I got off the school bus in the mornings when I heard this song earlier. It gave me that warm feeling you get when you wonder if your crush likes you just as much as you like them.  It didn't help that the goody bags would have those infamous notes attached.  You know the ones-- Do you like me? Yes or No. Those were the days!  Trust, I was up snapping my fingers grooving with the refreshing change of lead vocals from Taj as I sang along.

The Light by Common- Every time I hear those opening lines "I never knew a l-l-l-love like this," I'm overwhelmed with all types of gushy feelings.  There's nothing like watching a rapper take off his cool to profess his love for the lady in his life.  Common is one that doesn't mind baring his soul in endearing, thought-provoking lyrics, which is why he's one of my favorite artists.  Could you imagine being the muse for this song? I ain't mad at 'cha, Erykah Badu!

Gots Ta Be by B2K- I ain't even gonna lie to y'all.  I was a big fan of B2K back in the day.  And this, which I believe was their second single, is my favorite song by the group.  One of the things I loved most about this song is the fact that the sugary sweet lyrics were professing some serious requirements for such young men!  Omarion sang that you gotta let him eat off your plate and all that!  Now these guys did suggest a ring towards the end of the song so I'm not even upset about the eating off my plate business lol.  Were you a fan of B2K back in the day?

Stay by Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko- Though this song makes me feel so sad, I can't stop listening to it.  It's almost painful listening to the begging on both Rihanna and Mikky Ekko's parts.  Nonetheless, I feel this longing for something whenever I listen to it. It's like I feel as they do, wanting desperately for that special someone to stay.  Especially when you know breaking up is inevitable, but something in you just can't let go.  Have you ever felt that way about someone?

Request Line by Zhane'- This used to be my jam back in the day! I remember turning up my mom's living room radio (or what you would now call a boom box) whenever this song came on. It always played during the midday jams on Saturdays, the day mama went to make groceries and left me at home to babysit my younger siblings and get the house cleaned up.  My friend D would come over, we would delegate chores to my siblings, and we would turn the radio up super loud and clean to the beat lol. Those were the days!  It also reminds me of those middle school days when I used to call the radio station and request songs just so I could dub them on a tape!  I know I wasn't the only one who did that!  Either way, I loved every single Zhane' put out, but this one was my favorite.  Does anyone know where these ladies are nowadays?

On The Radio by Nelly Furtado- Listening to Nelly Furtado this morning brought back memories of 2001. This was a pivotal point in my life, as I was learning many lessons in self-love. Ironically enough, lyrics in Nelly's song declare that she had decided to stay true to herself-- something I was learning to do at that same time.  While she was clearly talking about her switch to mainstream, her message spoke to my high school self perfectly.  I didn't have to fit in with others. It was okay if I was a nerd, or loved to read & write ALL THE TIME, or didn't have a million name-brand pieces in my wardrobe. I decided back in 2001 to stay true to myself no matter what.  I lost a few friends, but looking back at everything, I realized they weren't my friends to begin with.  If any young ladies and gentlemen are reading this, always remember to love yourself first.  If you have to change any aspect of who you are to fit in with others, chances are you don't need to be around them in the first place.  Never dim your light to satisfy others.  People who don't want to see you doing your best don't have your best interest at heart anyways!  Listen to the song :)

Good Good Love by Rapsody- Hearing Rapsody, or any of the very talented artists from the JAMLA roster always make me feel proud to rep North Carolina.  This track, which is probably my favorite from the album, talks about the perils of that tricky love thang we call break-up to make-up. In the chorus BJ the Chicago Kid sings "For him she packed all her Louie, all her Fendi, all her Prada, but somehow she left her heart." Many if not all of us can relate to not being able to walk away from the one we love so easy. If you like what you hear, be sure to purchase her project The Idea of Beautiful from iTunes here. You will not be disappointed!

Bonita Applebum by A Tribe Called Quest- Now this one right here is a guilty pleasure for me. When I hear the lyrics, "Do I love you... Do I lust for you... Am I sinner 'cuz I do the two?" I get all kinds of hype waiting for the beat to drop.  Q-tip is pretty much begging Ms. Bonita Applebum to "put him on" with his witty lyrics and even compares her to a hip-hop song!  Bonita Applebum just has such a laid-back feel to it, I could listen to it over and over.  Are you a fan of this track?  Were you a fan of A Tribe Called Quest back in the day?

I Do Love You by GQ- Now this song right here!  Man, they don't make music like this anymore!  Of course this song isn't from my day or time or whatever, but I fell in love with it after hearing it on the movie Baby Boy years ago.   I played it for my mom a few times and she asked me, "What do you know about GQ, girl?" lol.  I know it's good soulful music, with a smooth feel, and lyrics that make you want to fall in love over and over again.  Are you feeling this one as much as I am?

Tuesday's Tunes: Volume 5

Happy Tuesday, folks!  How are you all doing today?  I hope all is well with each and every one of you and I thank you kindly for dropping by my little piece of the blogosphere today.  Without further adieu, let's get into some of the music that's been oozing through my speakers today while I've cooked, cleaned, danced, laughed, and sorted laundry.  Here goes!

Be Thankful for What You Got by William Devaughn-  Now this is truly Cadillac riding music.  Though I don't have a great big Cadillac (lol)  I'm thankful for the many things I do have.  I love listening to this song, not only because it's a smooth tune, but because its message is so spot on.  Be Thankful for What You Got is a reminder to do just that, take the time to appreciate what you have been blessed with. There are many others who are praying for the things many of us spend too much time complaining about.  Just in time for the season of being thankful, William Devaughn will get plenty of plays around my way.

Gotta Man by Eve-  It doesn't take much for me to put a little E-V-E into rotation.  So when this song played on Pandora this afternoon I was standing up reminiscing and singing, "Gotta man that I think I'm gon' love forever, and forever we'll be together."  Something about this song reminds me of a simple kind of love.  You know the love when you're drawing hearts in the margins of notebooks with your name and someone temporarily special affixed in their middles?  That kind of love.  Gotta Man is the type of love song we could definitely appreciate coming from a self-proclaimed pit-bull-in-a-skirt that is still just as relevant today as it was years ago.

Poetic Justice by Kendrick Lamar featuring Drake-  I think this has been my favorite song since Kendrick Lamar dropped Good Kid M.A.A.D City a few weeks back. Not only is it sampling one of my favorite Janet Jackson (yes Ms. Jackson the one I adore) songs, it shares the same title of my favorite movie, Poetic Justice, starring her also. Now whether you analyze the title as paying homage to Janet, or see it literally meaning 'virtue is rewarded and vice is punished' is totally up to you.  Like many of us who write our feelings better than we vocalize them, Kendrick says that he can "never right his wrongs unless he writes them down for real." Poetic Justice is definitely served in this hip-hop slow jam as Kendrick Lamar and Drake tantalize and mesmerize us with their lyrical prowess.

Come to Me (Peace) by Mary J. Blige- Hearing this song this afternoon made me think of my cousin Tay.  We always have the most in-depth talks about life, love, relationships, and womanhood.  One day while riding to one of our favorite eateries, she was playing this song.  And boy was she feeling it!  She was singing it boldly and beautifully like she was feeling it in her bones.  See, that's what a Mary J. song will do to you! It will have you swimming or sinking deep in feelings you didn't even know you had!  As Mary and Tay continued on with their duet, I began listening to the lyrics and missing that love I was praying would find its way back to my heart also.  We were in that moment three women all begging to make peace with the same thing.  And before I knew it we were in tears.

It's So Hard by Big Pun-  I didn't know Big Pun personally nor am I aware of what he did in his personal life.  But I was saddened by his passing back in 2000.  I was surfing through YouTube today when I came across the video and just knew I had to add it to today's playlist.  I mean, everybody plus one were in this video, showing love and paying homage to the late great rapper Big Pun. It was so warm to see people coming together to celebrate a life.

What have you been listening to lately?
What's that one song have on repeat these days?

Tuesday's Tunes: Volume 4

Happy Tuesday, ladies and gentlemen!  How is your day going so far?  I hope all is well with each and every one of you.  I also want to thank you all for stopping by my little corner of the web today.  You could have been on any other site right now, but you're here rocking with me.  And for that, I am very appreciative :-)

For this week's installment of Tuesday's Tunes, I would like to share with you a few songs on my playlist today.  I hope you enjoy the selections!

Miss My Love by Antoine Dunn- What can I say about Antoine Dunn and his smooth Baptist Church soul- stirring vocals?  I became a fan of Antoine Dunn after hearing his single "Can't Forget" a while back.  So I was pleasantly surprised to hear the release of another single in "Miss My Love."  If you like this song and are asking yourself "Who is Antoine Dunn?" please get familiar by visiting his site at www.antoinedunn.com.  His debut album Truth of the Matter will be released on October 16, a week from today, so be on the lookout!

I Don't Know Why I Love You by Brand New Heavies- Anyone who has ever heard this song cannot ignore the beautifully painful lyrics N'Dea Davenport is forcing out of herself in "I Don't Know Why I Love You." I never knew love and pain coupled could sound so good! As a fan of the Brand New Heavies, I must say this is one of my favorites by them.

Cheers 2 U by Playa-  The first time I heard "Cheers 2 U" I was riding in my mom's minivan enjoying a chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream bar.  We had just left the grocery store and it was apparent that music and the ice cream were all that would ensure a peaceful 30 minute ride home for mommy and her four precocious children.  It's crazy what songs memories attach themselves to.  After hearing this song I went home and  begged my cousin to buy me Playa's album by the same name. As my siblings can probably recall, this allowed me the opportunity to play the tape repeatedly in the car and house until everybody got tired of hearing it.  I wonder if any of them grew to love the late-great Static Major as much as I did.

Never Make a Promise by Dru Hill-  This was such a touching song. I love each sentiment that the song leader "Jazz" expressed in these lyrics.  "I promise I'll never hurt you, I'll never make you cry... I'll keep you safe, I'll keep you warm, I'll keep you satisfied."  And he vowed to keep these promises in the video, when he learns his pregnant girlfriend is being abused by her stepfather.  This one is definitely a tear-jerker for you.

Cherry Wine by Nas featuring Amy Winehouse- If you know me well, you know I Stan for three rappers.  Nas happens to be one of them, so you can probably imagine how much I have played out Life Is Good since its summer release.  My favorite track from the album, "Cherry Wine," features the vocals of the late Amy Winehouse in the chorus.  In the video, Nas serves the drinks in this classic bar setting as projections of Amy performing adorn the walls.

Are you a fan of these tunes?  What are you listening to?
